Obsession With Big Fuzzy Jackets

Copying other people's work

The original was water color in gray and green. It was an advertisement for a company like Macy's or Nordstrom's. I love it when a piece of art can capture the mood when some of the information is missing. She has one arm, no legs and only some of the lines on her face are there. It doesn't matter that all that information is missing because our minds fill the blanks in for us. This is part of what creates an interesting image.

Breaking out of the Box

Study of an Yves Saint Laurent sunglasses advertisement.

A lot of times when I pick up a pencil to draw, I begin by drawing the same way I always have. First by creating an outline, and then by filling it in and shading how I think it looks. When you draw something the way it really looks, you hardly ever outline and instead do mostly shading.

Drawing is frustrating for me, but I feel like I accomplished something here. I was able to capture a close rendition of the photograph by sketching in where the shadows and glares are while doing it with a sort of style.

Sometimes when you let loose and scribble you come up with some pretty amazing stuff.

It's been a long time.

I realize I started this blog a long time ago. I added a short series of drawings and then went on leave from art. Since I've been back in school I started back up. My drawings have evolved a little to fit my design major. I'll add some of those drawings later after I've scanned them into the computer.

In the mean time, I have some other work I can display.

The images below are from a class I took this quarter called Digital Presentation for Apparel Design. The idea is that we create a concept and then sketch out a small collection of designs. The first image is the concept; a collage of images that create inspiration and a theme, and the second image is the small collection that you design that relates to that theme.

This is from my Final Project in Digital Presentation for Apparel Design

A Concept project for my Digital Presentation class

The objective for this class was to learn how to use the Adobe Suite. I'm lucky that I've been using Adobe for 10 years, so I had a head start compared to the rest of the class; adobe programs are extremely challenging. I'm also lucky that my bf Steve is has spent much of his career in graphic design.
